Hotels/Motels was an experimental festival in which proclaimed artists and creative individuals engaged each room as an alternative exhibition and performance space. Most importantly! I had hoped to provide a more intimate and accessible public arts venue. One, that would foster creative participation as well as a dynamic and productive experience for all who attended.
The event, took place on the entire second floor of the motel. Each artist or group of artists and musicians, occupied and transformed their own room. One, was designated “the poetry room”, offering an open-mic on my old karaoke machine. Everyone seemed to have taken advantage of this forum! The Poetry Room also included body painting and other visual works on exhibition. Poetry then flowed into lyric in the neighboring room, scheduled for open-acoustic/vocals and included a small PA (this room was also shared by a painter and her bartender). Anyone with a voice and an ear was invited to make music in this room.
Other prescribed music related performances included Hirsch the Machine Hirsch, Abel Ashes, The Trumnerflora Collective and DJ (Mike Stelmesky), who also used the room to show his paintings. This room, had become a magnet for many other local DJs to cut the rug. The room was literlly packed with local DJs!
Every room embodied its own character: site-specific installation, visual works in various media, intimately displayed on beds and counter-tops, strange performances ranging from music and poetry to body painting and other spontaneous happenings.
The event, invited and inspired people in the community to bring work of their own and/or to participate in anyway they chose. The success of this, as well as all other Life Stage events, was due to the active involvement of the artists and the community.
